Meditation with intervals: how to set up timed steps on iPhone and Apple Watch

Split your sit into steps, give each step its own length, and let something mark each change: a soft bell from your iPhone, or a tap on your wrist from your Apple Watch.

A basic countdown on a phone counts one length. For intervals you either set a string of alarms, or you use an app that holds the steps for you.

Three ways to get intervals

  • Several alarms. Set one for each change. It works, but you set them all again for every sit, and an alarm sound is not a quiet way to end a quiet step.
  • An interval bell app. You pick a few lengths and it rings between them. Good for a fixed pattern.
  • A practice in steps. You write the sit once as steps in order, each with its own length, and run it whenever you like. That is what Turi does.

Set up intervals in Turi

  1. Set the total time for the sit.
  2. Add the steps in order, each with its own length.
  3. Group steps into sections that repeat, and mark some as optional.
  4. Untick whatever you will leave out today.
  5. Begin. Each step starts on time, and your Watch taps your wrist at every change.

Ready made practices are there too, from a few minutes to as long as you like, if you would rather start from one.

No Watch? A soft bell instead

Without a Watch, your iPhone marks each step with a soft bell. You choose from bells and bowls made to ring and fade naturally.

How Turi does it

  • Steps in order, each with its own length, in sections that repeat.
  • Your Watch taps at each new step, and can tap out the step number, so you always know where you are.
  • While the Watch guides, your iPhone rings no bells unless you want one.
  • Begin with Siri, from Control Center, or with the Action button on Apple Watch Ultra.

Questions

Do I need an Apple Watch?

No. Without a Watch, your iPhone marks each step with a soft bell. The Watch adds taps, so your eyes can stay closed and your phone can stay quiet.

Can I change the length of a single step?

Yes. Every step has its own length, and you can change a name, a time or the order whenever you like.

Is it free?

Turi is free to download, with 14 days of everything and no card. Building your own practices, and running them after the 14 days, need Turi Plus.
