Tallied guide
How to see your spending from your bank e-statements in Singapore
Download the PDF e-statements your bank already keeps for you, then total each month's lines by category, in a spreadsheet or with an app that reads statements.
You don't need to give anyone your bank login, and the statements show what the bank actually charged, not what you remembered to write down.
Why statements are the record to use
Every card payment, GIRO bill, PayNow transfer and NETS QR payment is already on your statements, at the amount the bank charged. Nothing depends on you logging each coffee as you buy it.
Banks also keep years of them. DBS and POSB keep e-statements for 7 years, so you can look back much further than you probably kept notes.
Step 1: download your statements
- Open your bank's app or internet banking and find e-Statements (sometimes under Documents or Accounts).
- Download each month for every card and account you use. Start with the last twelve months.
- Save the PDFs in one folder, with a subfolder for each bank if that helps.
Step 2: turn them into spending
By hand, in a spreadsheet: copy each statement's lines into columns for date, description, amount and category, then make a pivot table by month. It's free and it works, but it takes a while. Lines like POS NETS QR PAYMENT TO: KOPI STALL need renaming before they make sense, and money you move between your own accounts has to be left out or it gets counted twice.
With an app that reads the statements for you: add the PDFs and it does the copying, naming and sorting. That's what Tallied is for (below).
Step 3: keep it going
Download each new statement when it arrives and add it, the same way. One folder of statements becomes your record of every month.
How Tallied does it
- Rebuilds your spending month by month from past e-statements, on your iPhone. A line like POS NETS QR PAYMENT TO: KOPI STALL becomes Kopi Stall under Cafés & coffee (an invented example).
- Tallied reads PDF e-statements from Singapore banks and cards, credit cards and savings accounts alike. It's been checked most on DBS/POSB; if a statement from your bank doesn't come in, Settings › Statements folder › Check every statement says why.
- PayNow and NETS QR payments to shops count as spending, and money you move between your own accounts or to your PayLah! wallet isn't counted twice.
- Pick a folder once; Tallied checks it when you open the app (and in the background when iOS allows) and adds statements it hasn't seen.
- Your statements never leave your iPhone; only a shop's name is looked up. No bank login, no account.
Tallied is on the Singapore App Store for iPhone and iPad. 7 days free, then S$6.99 a month or S$59.99 a year.
Questions
Do I need to give a budgeting app my bank login?
No. Statements are enough. Tallied never connects to your bank: you save the statements you already receive, and it reads them on your iPhone.
Which banks can Tallied read?
Tallied reads PDF e-statements from Singapore banks and cards, credit cards and savings accounts alike. It's been checked most on DBS/POSB; if a statement from your bank doesn't come in, Settings › Statements folder › Check every statement says why.
I kept my spending in a spreadsheet. Can I add it?
Bring your own spreadsheet (CSV or Excel): it needs a date, a description and an amount (or money in / money out). Every sheet is read, and month-across summary sheets work too.
